I want my students to be excited about reading! Our students often come to us having had extreme difficulties in their prior English courses. Graphic novels promote visual literacy and engage students in a number of ways that traditional novels cannot, being limited by their format. We currently have a small school library equipped with mostly traditionally-formatted novels, and we would like to expand to reach more students both in class and with their independent reading. Teaching graphic novels as literature both elevates the format and adapts classics for a new audience, and represents a new generation of authors and readers sharing important and culturally relevant stories in a visceral way.
