In a Junior High English Language Arts class, students are learning either how much they love or hate reading. For the more reluctant readers, it is as simple as providing them with books that peak their interests, meet their reading levels, and feel relevant to their lives in order to completely change their perspective on reading. Sometimes all it takes is a great graphic novel! As our classrooms become more diverse, it is imperative that students see themselves in the stories they read so that they can grow as readers and people. We also need to provide literature for students who lack the resources to have interesting books of their own. Educators have to compete with the excitement of technology and social media to keep their students engaged and committed to growing academically, and the more literature we can bring into the classroom that they feel speaks to them, the more excited they will be to participate in the classroom.
