There is a shift around third grade from teaching children how to read to having students read to learn, sadly many third graders are far from proficient readers to adequately understand what they are reading. Specifically, my students struggle with reading & comprehending increasingly difficult texts and they struggle with reading fluently. Because of their reading struggles, often reading becomes a chore instead of an enjoyment. One of the best ways to become a better reader is to read more; combining a good book with a comfy place will help encourage reading. The reading bench bookcase, comfy chairs, and pillows will invite even the most reluctant reader in. In this nook, my students can take time to practice their reading skills, they can enjoy a good read-aloud and they can explore a variety of topics and authors.
