Studies have proven that children perform higher academically when they are physically active. Children need to move, this is plain and simple. We live in an era of technology that has taken over the home lives of many of these children. The reality is that they do not go home and play outside all day. Flexible seating allows these children the movement they need: wobbling, rocking, and bouncing, all which increase oxygen flow to the brain. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Flexible seating also encourages students to choose a spot where they can do their best and most productive learning. As an educator, I have sat in professional development meetings that have lasted all day. This is like torture because you want to be engaged, but you are so uncomfortable that all you can think about is when the next break will be. I feel that children need options when it comes to the classroom. We take many brain breaks in our class but with flexible seating, my classroom will be more active, engaged, and enthusiastic. Flexible seating will increase student learning. It is a win-win for us all!
