These books will help students to see that their struggles is experienced by others, and can be overcome. I want them to read about characters that look like them. I think this is essential for them to gain the self confidence needed to succeed. Many students of color often can’t relate to the characters they are reading about and this could lead to lack of focus, or disinterest. As a person of color, I didn’t read about people like me as a student and therefore limited my vision for the future. I did not realize that others experienced things I did. There books will help me to teach my students that they have the capability to do great things.
