The past year has been particularly hard on students from our most at-risk families. By helping students learn how to handle their social-emotional needs, they are better able to learn and become productive caring members of society. By using art and sensory items, students can learn what calm feels like in their bodies. They are able to find healthy ways to handle the stress, anxiety, and difficult situations over which they have very little control. In today's classroom, anxiety, big emotions, and self-control of lessons that many of my students need to be successful. As they learn to deal with their emotional needs I overlay those skills in core academic areas like math, reading, and writing by first using a game format to help them learn to balance the highs and lows that come with the struggles of learning new things. This grant contains the items I need to scaffold this learning process.
