Capture A "Love" for Reading

Funded Aug 30, 2021

My 5th Grade class and I are especially grateful for the Scholastic Readers. With joy and excitement, we were able to read rich literature, have thought-provoking discussion and most of all Take Action!

There were many fantastic articles, however, two articles in particular jolted us in a unique way. The first article was a debate on Group projects vs. Not working in groups. This rich discussion lasted all week. Students continued to prove their points, by showing evidence.

Next, the article about Saving the Women in Afghanistan warmed our hearts. This school year, one student in particular lost her mother due to cancer. As a result, any book /magazine /article that we read that includes women or women's struggles is tender to our class' hearts. After reading that article, the class decided to collectively help a local Women's Shelter collect toiletries and gently worn shoes. Yes, they realized a problem and took action! Mission Accomplished! My prayer is that the students see power in numbers and that when they recognize a social issue, they feel uncomfortable enough to take action and seek a solution.

These life lessons make such an impact that we we will never forget. Not only did students develop a Love for Reading but we're compelled to take action, as well. Thank you again for taking a chance on my students...The Future Global Decision Makers!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Smith
