Most first graders are visual learners! They respond to colorful visual images from the real world to help them learn vocabulary and use visual aides to follow schedules and routines. When you are just beginning to learn to read and write, you depend on images and other visual media to help you navigate the world of learning. With a working color printer, I can shift from the retro world of black and white images to one in which visual pictures come to life and leave a lasting impression. Children are more engaged and captivated when photographs are in color. I can build their print awareness with images to match important vocabulary terms. I can provide them with printed take-home books that are in full color to inspire them to read at home. As my students develop into readers and writers, they can then begin to produce and publish their own projects. They will be able to print real world photographs that they discover in the natural world when we are learning Science concepts such as living and nonliving or man-made versus natural features of the Earth. The world is a colorful and vibrant place and the printed world in my classroom should be too!
