Developing Organizational Skills for Middle School Success!
Funded May 3, 2022Our students are so very appreciative of the binders, page protectors and school supplies you so generously sponsored. We have been able to use these items to help learn about ancient civilizations, English and organization. Thank you for your support.
When students arrive in room 323, it is often the first time they've been in a school in the U.S. They are all English language learners from Central and South America. Most arrived in the U.S. with very few personal items and their families have difficulty providing the children with school supplies and resources. On their first day a buddy student (someone who has been here for at least one month) helps them choose an English and a Social Studies binder, and then helps them arrange essential documents and copies in their binders. The buddy then models for the newcomer how to use the binder in our classes.
This past fall the Ancient Civilization students learned about Paleolithic and Neolithic man, and completed a campfire model as a note catcher. They used their binders to collect and organize the materials for this project. Later in the term, they completed model Ziggurats with spaces for notes to review our unit on Mesopotamia, and Lotus flowers for our unit on Ancient India. All of the original readings and documents are neatly arranged in their binders, which they refer to every day. These are meaningful tools that help our students bridge the learning gap while also improving their organizational and English proficiency skills.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Vinay
