With this sensory table, students will engage in hands-on learning activities that translate directly to the world around them. In my classroom, I want every child to know the "why" behind what I am asking them to do. During a lesson about our environment, students would be able to pick trash out of the "ocean" from the water and other materials in the sensory bin. In a unit about dinosaurs, the students could actually use a small shovel to dig in the sand and find rocks and fossils. They can use tongs and magnets to pick up small items to develop fine-motor skills, a skill they will need across grade levels. By funding my project, you will be putting real materials in the hands of students, rather than constant devices. Looking at a slide presentation of the desert will never be the same as reaching into some sand and picking out the animals that belong in that habitat. A sensory table and the associated materials will allow students to have experiences they may not otherwise get a chance to have.
