In the new year, my 4th grade students will be deep diving into their first big writing unit of the year. After experiencing the full impacts of COVID-19 during their 2nd and 3rd grade school years, they learned to adapt to typing, rather than learning to LOVE writing. With this upcoming unit, many are hesitant and anxious about the idea of writing over long periods of time. They feel that they are inadequate, and recognize the learning loss they have experienced (as it relates to writing/grammar/spelling/handwriting) due to the nature of remote learning and having to type on computers. To build excitement, I am looking to buy blank books they can use to publish their own realistic-fiction piece at the end of the unit. There is so much joy and magic around writing, and I'm hoping to help support them in rebuilding and finding a love for writing!
