Our students also have worries big and small. Some experience anxiety from home, school work, gender identity, worldly issues, etc. The students desire to do well in school and learn many new things, but for some anxiety has created a wall of frustration and overwhelming feelings. I am creating a safe place in my office for students to work through big emotions, but I am also thriving to create a safe place in their classrooms to learn about their big emotions. All of the SPOT series books identify specific emotions in a fun and colorful way, along with coping skills. Grief is a big emotion to understand and so books like the Invisible String and The Memory Box will help a student work through the loss. Books like Jacob's New Dress and It Feels Good to be Yourself help explain gender identity to students and to calm the fears of students who need extra support in coming out. And finally, even when we have big emotions we want to show kindness to ourselves and others, and introducing books like Kindness is My Superpower is Important. Using the list of books in my office and their classrooms will show students how to recognize big feelings, coping skills, and also how we are all different. Finally, there are also textiles like Magformers that are used for a type of coping skill.
