The materials you are helping to provide will be the foundation of a class library for my English Language Development classes. Every class will incorporate independent reading or read-alouds from informational texts and classics of literature. The informational texts provide students with exposure to subjects that are outside the realm of their experience. The English language classics and influential pieces of literature from around the world offer students touchstones to references that are integral to the English language and its associated cultures. Embedding reading into their English Language Development class provides a structured environment to read, be supported in their reading, and fosters an environment of shared literacy. According to Dr Tracy Weeden, CEO and President of the Neuhaus Education Center, literacy is the currency of power in today's knowledge economy. When we equip our students with the language skills they need to access higher education and higher paying jobs, we raise the standard of living for the next generation. Giving students opportunities to read and listen to books being read, builds students' comprehension of texts and vocabulary. Reading also expands their knowledge of the world and its diversity, as well as empathy for people who are different from themselves. Reading literary and informational texts opens up the world to students by expanding their language and comprehension of English.
