Virus Hunters: How Science Protects People When Pandemics Strike
Funded Oct 25, 2024Thank you for supporting the book "Virus Hunters" for McCall students.
In addition to learning about important illnesses, they enjoyed thinking like scientists to solve problems. For example, they learned the importance of using different ways to gather information, such as interviews and data collection. They also learning about the importance of sharing this information with others--which in turns creates more learning.
Students also learned important reading skills. We practiced nonfiction text structures and integrating images. Students were able to use this information to write a problem/solution essay and then share what they learned with their peers.”

Cue the Lightening: It's Greek Mythology Time
Funded Nov 28, 2023Thanks to your support, all 7th grade McCall students were able to engage meaningfully with Greek Mythology. They formed the important base knowledge and were able to discuss complex ideas such as theme, importance of over time, and subtle differences in version.
From this base knowledge, students were able to then create their own god or goddess that expressed both their own interests and what they learned.
Even almost a year later, students are still coming to tell me about connections they are making between their lives and Greek mythology.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Goedde

Where We're From: Novels in Verse
Funded Dec 10, 2021Thank you for supporting our literature circles! With the books you donated, students were able to select from six novels-in-verse, which included a range of stories that spoke to my multicultural classroom.
By giving students the opportunity to choose from several books, you offered them the chance to both find stories they'd never imagined before, as well as to make connections to their own lives.
In literature circles, students meet daily to read, complete activities, and discuss what they've read and learned. This creates opportunities for students to lead their own learning and teach each other. As I walk through the classroom, I hear students sharing their discoveries and insights with each other, and I've seen new leaders emerge.
For our final project, students will be creating their own novellas in verse. They will draw from what they've learned to become authors themselves. Thank you for giving them this opportunity to learn from these wonderful texts!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Goedde
