One of the shortcomings I found as I began setting up my classroom were books that represented the demographics of my class and encouraged students to see themselves in motivational and inclusive stories. Every student deserves to see themselves in their texts, especially in encouraging and uplifting ways. My goal is for students to feel comfortable in every way while in my class. A big factor in their comfort lies in my students understanding that I see them. I see them for each individual personality, background, and life situation and love them through everything they bring to me. Almost everything in this wishlist ties into that goal. I have thoughtfully chosen books that represent the demographics of my students and show how we can be proud of their cultural backgrounds. I just moved to the area from Guam, home to a very unique group of people and historical culture that was unfamiliar to me. The greatest thing that came from my time there was learning how to pause and let my students teach me, help me understand their needs, and open my mind to new things! I want to do that here at my new school as I embark on my first year of teaching full time! The rest of my wish list is to help with classroom management and the odds and ends of classroom organization! The most notable financial investment lies in the seating cushions! These are a wipeable (COVID Friendly) alternative to a library area. It is important to give students differentiated seating for their brains to refresh and adjust to changing subjects!
