In my classroom, the students will gain a love for and learn how to read, write, and converse/discuss across a variety of topics and genres. Our classroom is a 3rd Grade ELA classroom with Writing and Social Studies built-in. My students love school. They get fired up about improvements that are made to our classroom. Two years ago, I spent 4 days over Christmas Break painting a peeling off-white classroom to the image you see below. Now, I need your help to make to create spaces within the classroom that are more conducive to learning. I learned through research recently, that long-term learning rarely happens if movement doesn't happen. Kids need to move their bodies, their mouths, and/or their hands as part of the learning process. Right now, the students have one seating option for learning: metal chairs. Sit in a cold, hard, metal chair...all day, and learn. Our current seating gets uncomfortable, quickly! Can you imagine learning to read, and trying to enjoy a good book, while very uncomfortable? I believe the students will learn so much more if the space is more conducive to learning! If funded, the students will have the chance to enjoy learning in multiple environments, all while still in the same classroom! They will get to read, write, and discuss while learning on round floor cushions, at a low activity table. They will cultivate an enjoyment of reading using comfortable/cozy seating. They will grow and improve their reading ability in guided reading, while seated on cushioned seats that match our school colors! I believe the students will learn so much more if the space is more conducive to learning!
