Critical Thinking Through Art
Funded Aug 30, 2022It is with great gratitude and appreciation that I submit this impact letter to you for your kindness and willingness to give. With the awesome supplies, I was able to supply my students with the drawing tools that they were able to enjoy while attending class.
When I was in school, I doodled in class. I got in trouble for it sometimes, because drawing in class can look a lot like goofing off and daydreaming. What I never managed to explain to my teachers is that my abstract swirls and shapes helped me repeat almost word-for-word the lesson I'd heard. Every part of the doodle brought to mind what I had been listening to while I drew it.
Today my students and co-teachers now understand using simple words and pictures helps us to see connections between pieces of information, get a better idea of what we understand and what we don't, and remember what we've learned later on.
Now I'm on a mission to get students to draw in every class and every subject, and into their professional lives.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Halkitis
iMac Skills
Funded Sep 29, 2022When you think of writing skills, you probably remember long essays, research reports, tests, or other stressful school assignments.
The stretch books allowed students to find the fun in learning by drawing what was being taught and what they learned.
The sketching prompts students to organize their thoughts visually, boosting comprehension and retention. Instead of passively writing down everything a speaker is saying, the practice pushes students to actively process and make sense of what they're learning.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Halkitis
