"No day in all my life had ever been as cruel as this one." So goes the novel entitled Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Set in the deep south during Jim Crow segregation, it is the story of a strong nine-year old protagonist of color, Cassie, who comes face-to-face with the harsh reality of racism, and the violence and cruelty that comes with it. This novel serves as an awesome springboard for class discussion of the many personal and social connections that they make to the novel. This is a tough novel to read, but every student that I have read this novel with comes away with a better understanding of history and how they can learn from it and treat others with equality and kindness. It is an eye-opening experience, but it is an empowering one as well! Cassie learns that her worth and value are not based on skin color. I truly feel that this can be a life-changing novel. Unfortunately, the few copies that we have are not enough to teach a whole class, and many of those copies are falling apart. Teaching this novel every year is absolutely one of my favorite things.
