Vocal Jazz Amplification Project
Funded Aug 6, 2023The Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School Jazz Choir has a long history of excellence. This small select choir of approximately 16 students sings a variety of jazz, blues and contemporary music. It is stylistically appropriate for the music to be presented with each student using a microphone. The ability to amplify their voices allows the students to ability to blend and balance and fully represent the intricate harmonies that are critical to a proper jazz vocal performance.
My students were thrilled beyond description when they heard themselves performing serious jazz arrangements with amplified voices as opposed to acoustic voices. They were finally able to hear the chords "ring" and fine tune the harmonic intensity of the extended chord structures.
Excitement leads to the opportunity to raise the bar of excellence. I firmly believe that my students will reach new heights in response to their delight in performing vocal jazz music with one student per microphone. It is with gratitude and joy that my students thank the generous donors that made this project come to fruition.

Funded May 3, 2022My singers at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School were in need of some formal black tuxedo vests and bowties. My students sound amazing and are enthusiastic hard-working musicians at a Title 1 designated school. Many of the families at our school have household incomes that place them under the poverty line. I want my students to look sharp. They deserve to look as fabulous as they sound. Thanks to you, the generous donors, we received enough vests for all my singers, that identify as tenor/bass vocalists, to be clad in good looking black vests and bowties. We have had one concert so far where some of the students wore those great looking vests! They received wonderful comments on not only their musical sound but also their professional look! In six weeks we will have another concert where all 25 singers will be adorned in the sharp attire.
My singers are so very appreciative and were delighted to put on the vests and admire their "handsomeness" and professionalism. Community members, audience-goers, friends and family filled my students with compliments and bolstered their confidence beyond description.
My students all look forward to being "sharp-dressed" singers for our many upcoming musical events. I look forward to observing the pride they exhibit while delivering that music in such professional attire.”
