To maintain a competitive and comprehensive percussion curriculum, all of our percussion students are required to learn (four-mallet marimba playing). Our percussion class size has increased tremendously, and our current mallet inventory no longer supports the growing numbers. The addition of marimba mallets will provide the opportunity for more students to practice using four mallets comfortably. This will help maximize class instruction and allow students to become more proficient marimba players. Our goal is to have as many students as we can practice (four-mallet playing), at the same time. We feel this will boost student’s confidence because they will feel more a part of a community of learners instead of having to wait their turn and loose valuable practice time. For the past 7 years, as a Band Director and Percussion Specialist, I have experienced that giving students an opportunity to play in a group/ensemble setting not only enhances their musicianship but it also cultivates transferrable skills, such as team building and socialization.
