I am an educator of color who serves in the 5th most diverse district in the nation, being an educator of color I know how important representation in the classroom and school setting is. My goal is to make my students feel valued and represented in the classroom. These books will further help me achieve this goal. Through these books, students can see themselves and other people from their community represented in a positive matter. These books will give my students the opportunity to see into the lives of others and help them understand what it may be like for someone who may not share their same values, religion, race, abilities, and socioeconomic status, preparing students to become better citizens in their communities. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, in hope that these books will allow students to connect on some level and develop positive insights about others. For BIPOC, who are often stereotyped or overlooked, it is important and validating to see themselves and their lives reflected in positive ways. These new books will help me support and represent my diverse learners and can help with positive changes that go beyond a classroom.
