The demographic of my school is minority-majority and I believe part of the literature they interact with should reflect that of the district. Forming a personal connection will help the student's excitement and engagement with the text. The novel will encourage deep and respectful class discussions, as well as what we can do to make a lasting difference. Seeing as the novel will be used for mainly graduating seniors and advanced placement students, I believe it is imperative that students view society through a lens other than what they've grown accustomed to. A lens that is similar to their own. I want my students to realize they have the power to be the change they want to see in the world and their possibilities are endless!!
