Kindergartners are excellent observers. They notice the individuals on street corners as their parents drive away from the supermarket. They wonder why these people have signs, suitcases or shopping carts full of belongings. Some of these students might know these struggles more intimately, perhaps their own family has taken refuge at a shelter or relied upon a food pantry for their next meal. When you donate to this project you will help us begin to destigmatize food and housing insecurity. Through the use of age-appropriate literature such as "I See You" by Michael Genhart and "Imagine If..." by Stephanie Vulhop we will discuss ways to help those who have been displaced. We will create 100 Care Kits to be distributed by the advocates who work with our local Police Department in aiding these individuals. When we read "Maddie's Fridge" by Lois Brandt and "Saturday at the Food Pantry" by Diane O'Neill we will discuss resources that help address the growing need for food assistance in our community. In a perfect world every student would have a warm bed and hot meal each night. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for many students and families. Through your donation we can not only begin to have these much needed conversations but we can find a way to move forward with hope and care.
