Calming Room (The Lions Den)
Funded Sep 29, 2023Thank you for your contribution to our Lion's Den. The students really love it. It's quiet, low lit and relaxing. They can calm their bodies when feeling big emotions and can take a break from the rigor of being in a busy classroom.
This room has become a great location for both the school counselor and me (behavior intervention specialist) to work with students with varying social and emotional needs. We use this room to provide social skills instruction in small groups. It allows us to work with 3-6 students at a time on varying skills, such as friendship, emotional regulation, getting along with others, calming our bodies, growth mindset skills, Yoga, and Mindfulness activities. This room is a calm place where all are welcome, fidgets are not only allowed but encouraged and everyone feels safe to express themselves.
The Lion's Den provides a place for students who are feeling big emotions, anger, sadness, frustration, etc., a place to feel those emotions, discuss them with an adult and reset in order to join their class. Students are given the freedom to feel what they need to, they can stomp their feet, lay in a tent, bounce on a yoga ball, do some deep mindfulness breathing, etc.
Thank you again for giving students the ability to feel what they feel in a safe proactive way. They are learning how to cope and deal with their feelings in an appropriate way and continue in their school day.
Thanks again and again”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jordan
