5th Grade Novel Study: Blood on the River
Funded Nov 16, 2022In my 5th grade classroom, you see students reading everyday! Not just inside the classroom reading at their desks, but reading on yoga mats on the grass in the sunshine, reading on boulders in the garden, reading in the shade in the hallway, reading in a teepee, reading on bean bags, reading with a kindergarten buddy, & more! Reading everyday with a book in hand in different environments is creating a love of reading and creating life-long readers.
Choosing books to read for daily silent sustained reading (SSR) and reading novels as a whole class read-aloud teaches the value of reading and provides meaningful learning.
When students in my classroom are empowered with these books in-hand to read, they learn to love reading and history. Blood on the River is a historically accurate novel exploring the lives of colonists in James Town, Virginia in 1607. Your donation ensured my students had the books they needed to complete a new historical novel study in class. It supported them to learn, to thrive and to succeed academically.”

Funded Nov 28, 2022Thank you very much for your incredibly generous donation to our project. Last week, every 5th grade class performed in four shows on stage in a live musical theatre for the entire school and families too. For most of the approximately 150 students, this was their first experience in the performing arts and they were all very proud of what they accomplished. It was a student run show; they were running the lights, sound, curtains, and were even ushers for the audience. Our stage crew created props, sets, and program art. Even with incorporating the interesting subject of science and the solar system into our performance, most students were very hesitant to audition and participate, but they did. I heard feedback from many students about how their attitude towards performing arts and the musical completely changed by the end, even from some of the teachers too. It was fun for all of us to work as a team. Now, many are interested in pursuing the arts in middle school and they have gained a new sense of confidence. Younger students and teachers can't wait to see what we perform next year! We couldn't have done it without your support. Thank you to the moon and back!”

Funded Oct 22, 2022Thank you for helping give my students Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning experiences in our classroom with a large vivarium for our new class pet, a bearded dragon named Rocky!
Lexington has the highest refugee population in the nation. Our students come to school to learn, build connections, and be happy. They are kind, safe, productive, and focused on their future. When students in my classroom are empowered with the tools to thrive, they succeed academically.
Providing a large vivarium tank has fostered an interest in STEM activities, creating a sense of responsibility in caring for Rocky, bringing pure joy, and supporting a love of hands-on learning.
Your donation has ensured my students have the vivarium needed to experience hands-on STEM learning and to be scientists in our 5th grade classroom! When recently asked, "what brings you joy?", during daily journaling, many of my students wrote about Rocky!”

Funded Sep 20, 2022Thank you for helping me give my students yoga mats to exercise in class, to work towards their physical fitness goals, and to create healthy habits for life. Lexington Elementary School has the highest population of refugees in the nation. My students come to school to learn, build connections, and be happy. They are kind, safe, productive, and focused on their future.
Providing students with yoga mats for exercise is fostering healthy habits for life.
Yoga is fun and has endless physical fitness benefits including improvement of strength, balance, and flexibility. The slow movements and deep breathing also support relaxation, self-awareness, and overall wellness.
Your generous donation is supporting students in my classroom with the tools they need to thrive. You have ensured each of my students has a yoga mat to use throughout the school year. Thank you!”

Funded Sep 20, 2022Thank you very much for helping give my students the basic classroom supplies and books they needed to start the school year thriving! Lexington Elementary School has the largest refugee population in the nation. Our students come to school to learn, build connections, and be happy. They are kind, safe, productive, and focused on their future. When students in my classroom are empowered with the tools to thrive, they succeed academically.
Providing new classroom materials and books for our first novel studies fostered a sense of pride and confidence, a love of learning, and a love of reading. Reading the historical fiction novel, The Sign of the Beaver, in its entirety with an actual book in-hand, provided students with the opportunity to fully experience this classic novel and support meaningful learning of the 5th grade social studies and ELA standards.
Your donation made learning more accessible to the diverse group of students in my classroom. It ensured my students had the basic supplies to begin the school year with hands-on learning in English, math, science, social studies, social-emotional learning, the arts, and more!”

Funded Apr 29, 2022Thank you very much for your generous donation to support my 6th grade students in the arts! We put on a spectacular production of Seussical the Musical at Flying Hills School of the Arts. Students led the show with acting, dancing, singing, lights, set-design, props, costumes, hair, make-up, and backstage crew. We couldn't have made their ideas come to life without the support of generous donors like you. Over ninety 6th grade students benefited from this donorschoose project and they will cherish their memories of this experience forever. Celebrating Dr. Seuss and literacy through theatre sends a wonderful message to students and young audience members alike. Thank you for your support!”

Funded Aug 21, 2021Thank you very much for your generous donation to my first Donor's Choose Project: Igniting Passion for Reading and ELA through Literature and Technology. Fully funding this project has given my ninety 6th grade students access to tangible books to read as a whole class for our three novel studies this school year: Hatchet, Percy Jackson, and The Breadwinner.
This project has also given my students access to technology to integrate artistic expression, such as using a classroom iPad to take photos in front of a green screen and create digital art; most recently, creating Ancient Greek Mythology tableaus. Having a class iPad and Apple TV for instruction has allowed us to use photos and videos for class projects and share our works of arts to truly shine this school year!
Thanks to you, my students have just finished reading Percy Jackson Lightning Thief with books in every hand; and they have watched the movie using our Apple TV, preparing for their final novel study project, a compare and contrast essay based on the book and movie. Your thoughtfulness has truly made a positive difference in students' learning; and we're not even half-way through the school year yet!
These books and the technology has empowered students to express their learning from the novel studies and other lessons through writing, music, dance, and the arts. Having books in hand, and following along while listening to Percy Jackson the audiobook on our bluetooth speaker everyday after lunch, has supported my students' with multiple modalities of learning. You have supported making learning more accessible for them. Whether we are listening to music on our new bluetooth speaker during class, PE, dance, yoga, or while rehearsing for our big musical theatre performances, students are having fun while learning; and they are benefiting from your donation on a daily basis.”
