Funded Nov 8, 2021The books you generously sponsored for our classroom have been placed in a special section of our library that my students have eagerly visited many times over the last several months. The stories they've read from these books have lead to meaningful conversations about kindness and the value of our differences. Many of the books provided through this project have also been utilized as read alouds, especially as we celebrated Black History Month and International Women's Day.
Two students in particular have created a book club of sorts, choosing a book to read form our donated library and taking turns with each book. After they've both read the book, they take time to discuss the stories. They've taken a particular interest in books that center on refugee and immigrant experiences. I've gotten to see their compassion grow as they've read and discussed these stories.
Beyond prompting these important conversations and growing compassion, the volume of reading my students are doing this year far surpassed prior years. It's rare that I have the "Dog Man" books or Alan Gratz books on my shelves because a waiting list has formed. Even more, students aren't only reading. They are excited to read. Thank you for being such an important part of our classroom this year and for the years to come. Your generosity is helping create a more compassionate generation to come with the literacy skills to make a difference.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lassman
