Our students will be able to prep the ground beds for spring planting with the battery powered cultivator. The hedge clippers will allow them to manage the pollination garden that is above our vegetable garden. The irrigation system will enable us to keep our gardens hydrated over the weekends and school vacations. Our students will be able to use technology (iPad or phone) to program the irrigation system. Our students use motor skills and critical thinking skills while in our garden. The garden is adapted with ground beds and raised beds to enable every student on campus to take part in gardening. We have constructed an archway for loofa vines to grow over. This provides an additional sensory element to our garden. Our wheelchair friends can roll through the archway to have shade, pick loofa, and feel the greenery. We have a raised herb garden that allows for smells, textures, and motor skills when harvesting to be enjoyed by all.
I wish you could each see our students in the garden, their faces light up with enthusiasm and pride as they harvest the crops each day. This year we have grown cabbage, brussel sprouts, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, strawberries, watermelon, squash, zucchini, okra, sunflowers, and loofa. Our students love tasting new flavors, smelling the different scents, and seeing how their garden grows. This year we harvested 3 large watermelons. We shared them with the PreK students in our building. These new tools will allow us to be more independent and involved in the process of gardening. The crops that we do not plan on eating are donated to others in need.
