I want to make reading fun again. Each "First Chapter Friday", students will listen as I read to them only the start of a high interest novel. They will complete a page of doodle notes as they listen and rate the book. After, they will have the opportunity to check out the book from my classroom library to take home. Due to recent budget reallocations, our school does not have a librarian. This is also the third year my students will be impacted by COVID-19. I want to build community in my classroom through the pages of these books. With your support, I can take my students on an adventure around the world as we quest for "that book" that will teach them to love reading again. I carefully curated this book list to expose my students to a diverse selection of highly rated, high interest young adult literature. These books feature American, African-American, Cuban, Mexican, and Jewish voices; they highlight historical events from 9-11 and the Holocaust to the Civil Rights Movement and #BlackLivesMatter. They address challenges my students face daily such as school drama, homelessness, disabilities, illness, family struggles, and depression - while also incorporating love and forgiveness, dogs, sports, and superpowers. I made sure to find samples from a variety of genres, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism, to expose students to stories they might not otherwise find on their own.
