These new books will be the second fifth-grade novel study for the 2021-2022 school year. Our current class sets of novels are torn, discolored, and smelly. They were already there when I inherited the classroom, and I do not want to use them this year. Understandably, students don't want to have to read books that are in terrible condition. It sends a message that our novel study isn't important enough to invest in.
That's why my team and I are determined to have new class sets of books this year! We chose a book called, "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio for our first novel study this year, and I'm grateful to announce that it's already been funded. "Wonder" is a story about a young person trying to overcome being different in a public school. Students tend to adore this book. It's simultaneously funny, interesting, and tear-jerking. Experiencing a novel together is an awesome way to build classroom community at the beginning of the school year.
For our second novel study, we'll be reading the New York Times Bestseller and Texas Bluebonnet Award Winner "Ghost Boys" by Jewell Parker Rhodes. It is a humorous yet heartbreaking story about how children and families face the complexities of today's world. I read this with my fifth-grade class in another district three years ago, and they were absolutely captivated.
Stories like these motivate students to be life-long readers, intellectual thinkers, and above all, kind people. Please help us fund our novel study for the 2021-2022 school year. We greatly appreciate any help!
