Nonfiction Texts to Grow Our Thinking

The students in my class and I thank you for your generosity! We loved learning about new topics; such as the water cycle, how roller coasters work, and the continents. I was able to use books purchased through this project to reinforce concepts during our water cycle and animal adaptations units in science. Additionally, we are using texts on the different continents as we learn about world geography in social studies.

In writing recently we completed expository texts on topics of personal interest. Students were able to use books purchased through this project to conduct research on their topic. We were also able to use these books as examples of excellent writing to model our own work off of.

Finally, books purchased from this project were used during our reading block. Students spend twenty to thirty minutes reading independently daily. Books on topics of interest to them increase their engagement during this time. Students also meet with reading partners to discuss books read. Books from this project were more often was discussed with partners and then placed in our "must read" bin in our classroom library. Students loved the variety of new topics they could read about and sharing this with each other.
