Funded Aug 10, 2021Thank you so much for your donation of 30 copies of Poisonwood Bible to my class. When my students first saw the books, they felt a little intimidated by the length (544 pages) of the book. Once we began to read, they began to realize that the size of a book does not dictate one's ability to read, understand, and enjoy the story contained in the pages. The reluctance in reading the novel began to wane after we finished the first section of the novel.
With this novel, students learned the value of perspective and point of view. Because the narrative is told through the voice of four daughter, students were able to understand how an event told from different perspectives reveals a better understanding of the event and the characters. Students were able to see almost all sides of an event or situation and make better inferences about character and thematic development.
A few of the students really enjoyed the novel. They were interested in the historical aspects Kingsolver weaved into the novel. They wanted to know more about how the Congo gain their independence and why it took so long to get their independence.
Again, thank you for your generous donation. I look forward to using these book next school year.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Thompson
