  • 2, 4, 6, 8.. Non-Fiction Books are Really Great!

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Recently, we had parent teacher conferences. Almost every parent I met with wanted to help their child to become a better readers and also asked for suggestions of how to motivate their child to read at home. Many parents were at a loss because they did not have access paper books/texts at their child's level and or interest of topics at home.

These new nonfiction texts could not have arrived at a better time.

I cannot tell you how thrilled the students were to get their hands on our new non- fiction readers. As I spread the books out on the tables and floor you could hear them talking with each other about the books topics, the photographs and other exciting features the books had. Several of my lowest readers chimed in about the mini photographs next to some of the words on each page. They made connections to reading strategies we have been practicing in guided reading groups (eagle eye, lips of the fish and careful caterpillar). They were over the moon when they found out that they could take books home to show their family how they are learning to use picture clues, sounding out words and thinking if their word choice looks right and sounds right. The students whose parents remarked about motivating their child to read at home were quite pleased that evening when their children brought home texts they wanted to read to their family.

One child in our class has a brother with asthma and another has a sister with autism. The look on their faces to see texts on such topics that they could read was priceless. They began telling other students in the class about their siblings and using the new books to help explain it.

These texts are not only going to help students to become more motivated and better readers in class and at home, but the connections they will be able to make with the diverse topics at many reading levels will help them to become deeper thinkers and more understanding human beings for the future.

Thank you again for your support and generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grossman

  • Keep Calm and Read On!

    Funded Sep 25, 2021

With mask protocols, you are not able to see the giant smiles on these students faces. Our class has many students who are reading below grade level and some reading at grade level. The number of "good fit books" we now have at our students independent reading levels have risen dramatically thanks to your donations. It is so very difficult to find fiction and non-fiction texts at the lower levels. Students who are beginner and emergent readers are often frustrated and saddened at the selection of books at their reading level. However, they now have more choices to help them practice reading skills with a teacher, with a buddy and by themselves in the classroom and at home. The books are high quality with vibrant illustrations and photos. The font of the words are large and easy to read. With your donations our class is on the way to adding more confident readers and thinkers to our world. Thank you again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grossman

Think back to when you were in first grade. What’s something you have a fond memory of? Like myself, it’s probably unlocking the code to reading! There’s nothing more exciting to a 6-year-old than being able to read a book to someone for the first time! Teaching students how to read is rewarding, but it can also be challenging when you do not have the proper tools at your hands. Having a variety of engaging texts at students’ instructional reading levels is necessary when teaching reading. Oftentimes, students cannot access the leveled texts they need because supply is low or limited in the classroom, their families cannot afford quality books, or language barriers make it difficult for some families to carry learning over from school to the home. Last year during the pandemic I saw the need to create equal opportunities for ALL of my students to learn to read from home. I purchased digital/electronic books out of pocket and was able to provide virtual guided reading instruction and interaction with books. Although electronic books served a purpose last year, it is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers to have a tangible book in front of them. Is there anything better than sitting in a comfortable spot with a good book in your hand? Additional leveled guided reading books would serve many purposes such as: -Make quality books available to ALL students, regardless of culture, socio-economic or academic differences -Empower students with the building blocks to succeed in reaching their reading goals -Provide engaging books to excite students about reading -Support students at their developmental stage of reading -Include families in supporting their children as readers with paper texts brought back and forth from school to home -Use as an intervention resource for struggling readers in other grade levels
