In early October, I was given twenty Kindergartners and a completely empty classroom. Due to overcrowding at my school, which is located in the largest refugee hub in the United States, I was made the fifth Kindergarten teacher. I was given three days to make a desolate classroom into a Kindergartener's learning paradise. Over the last few months, my classroom has been learning, laughing, loving, and using a lot of supplies. My students are mostly refugees, my school is low income with access to few resources. I'm not only buying the students' school supplies. My precious five year olds do not have access to basic supplies necessary for living in Chicago. They need coats, hats, gloves, extra food to bring home, on top of school supplies that are not provided from my school (like white copy paper). I have been given very little for my students, and the financial burden on their first year, 24 year old teacher has been unendurable. These kids are incredible, smart, eager to learn, and they deserve access to resources so they can have the same opportunities at success.
