Welcoming back students to in-person learning is an exciting and nerve-wracking time. Our First Grade team plans to use our science standards and explore life cycles by creating a community garden. We feel this will be an engaging, hands-on experience for students that will allow them to learn and give back to their community. Our plan is to transform our rooms and outside areas into a garden and eventually a garden shop where students can share their knowledge about plants with members of the community. We will learn about how plants grow and explore different kinds of seeds. We will determine the best conditions for plants while experimenting with light, water, soil, and sand. We will learn about pollination and how we can get our plants to grow and spread. Using the grow kits we will study the root systems of plants and how and why they grow. Using all of this information students will work to grow their own plants, write about their plants and be able to share this information with the community. They will use the gardening tools to create the garden, plant different types of seeds and succulents using the soil, sand, and peat pots. They will be in charge of taking care of their plants using the watering cans and will have ownership over their gardens. Not only will plants go in this garden but our students will grow in the knowledge and love of learning too!
