I recently attended a training in which the speaker talked about students being "different kinds of smart." The speaker went on to say how we, as teachers, should take every opportunity to tap into students passions that go beyond the stereotypical academics we teach in our classroom each day. This really got my wheels turning thinking about where I could fit some of this "passion focused teaching" into my school day. Many teachers are making the conscious decision to replace morning work with STEM bins. STEM bins tap into students ability to be creative and practice their engineering skills. For my class specifically, I feel as though STEM bins will be a great addition because of my high population of English learners. Having a low pressure start to the day will allow students to build confidence in themselves for the rest of our academic day. Each morning I plan to have a group get a STEM bin and an object projected on the board for the students to build. The STEM bins will be rotated around each group so students have the opportunity to work with various materials. The goal in using STEM bins rather than morning work is to promote creativity and critical thinking among students while helping students feel successful and proud of their own creations.
