Since March, 2020 students all over the world have been experiencing education isolated from their peers, sitting behind a computer screen. Even before the Pandemic, classroom whiteboards were being replaced with technology, and many essential skills have dissipated with that shift. Upon returning to schools, the majority students will come back to a familiar routing…sit for direct instruction, sit while taking notes, sit while doing guided practice, sit while doing homework…it is no wonder that their level of engagement is nearing an all time low. Passive learning such as this leads to surface level concept attainment and more mimicking of what the teacher does and less thinking about the math. If the teacher is best able to teach standing and presenting, wouldn’t the students be best able to learn also standing? Some seat time is a necessity, but there is a better way to promote thinking and collaboration. An alternative workspace is a vertical non-permanent surface, I.e. white boards around the classroom where students learn to be mathematical thinkers on small groups.
