How will these tools be used? So glad you asked! Gone are the days of sitting at a desk and listening and repeating. My students are using physical movement to engage in authentic language acquisition. Nonetheless, when working (whether independently or in groups) they're sitting on floor cushions and balance discs for their comfort, and to provide a more social and relaxed atmosphere for them to comfortably practice among peers or complete their tasks. They may also be used as props during a dramatization task! We will be using dry erase boards for a PLETHORA of things ranging from Pictionary, drawing a picture of words they need in Spanish (so they can stay in the Target Language), quick assessments, and maybe even as props when we are acting out! And the puppets? Well because how can we leave out puppets from dramatizations! More importantly, my shy students gain a surprising amount of confidence when they’re using puppets to speak. Their mistakes become “humorous” instead of “overwhelming” or “worse… embarrassing, which discourages them from trying. Also because who doesn’t get excited when a puppet comes out of nowhere to say “Excelente pronunciation!” or “bárbaro! Me gustó mucho tu cuento!”… my students absolutely LOVE using puppets … and it STICKS! Multicultural puppets are a must-have, especially for a Spanish class, because it’s a true reflection of our world, our community, and it cements diversity and inclusion in world languages.
