I am blessed and grateful to be able to teach a group of students with disabilities, but who struggle to learn. Unfortunately, they do not function well in a regular educational classroom setting; therefore, I teach several groups of students with different disabilities who are capable of learning best in a pull out class model. My students and I had a discussion about a pet that could possibly be housed in my classroom. We decided that fishes would be the best pet of choice. Just like the fish in water, I want the students to think about the environment in which they and many other people live. I want my students to be able to discuss if the water is appropriate or not. I want my students to be able to answer questions about who takes care of their environment in which they live. I want my students to be able to relate to others around the world who may have a water shortage or environmental problem. While studying about the world around them, I also want my students to be able to make responsible decisions. I want my students to be able to take care of a living, breathing thing, and be able to show either sympathy or empathy. I want my students to be able to take care of a fish tank (the environment) without doing any damage. Also, I want my students to be able to feed, name, and at times, explain any changes that have been made in the fish's environment. I want my students to be able to address an issue in real time and discuss. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student function and social skills, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
