In order to create a well-rounded musical experience, I try to engage as many of the senses as possible in a lesson for my students. Because music is something we can only hear, we use manipulatives such as scarves, ribbons, parachutes, and puppets to bring music to life visually. Active listening creates a connection between a student hearing music and expressing it visually. In the music classroom we teach active listening through manipulatives. Scarves and ribbons show movement of melodies and gives visual cues of patterns in music. Students pass bean bags to each other in time to display the steady beat or heartbeat of music creating a visual, aural, and kinesthetic model of a fundamental musical concept. Elementary students learn music through play. We use bean bags in the classroom for activities which motivate children to sing and cooperate with one another. Puppets catch students' interest and encourage student participation through storytelling and singing. My students deserve a music education that allows them to express themselves and challenges their musical abilities. Manipulatives and props for the music classroom help students immerse themselves in music and bring to life foundational concepts that might otherwise be difficult to visualize.
