  • Calming Corner for Sensory Needs

    Funded Aug 13, 2021

    I just wanted to take a moment and thank you from the bottom of my heart. My students were soo surprised with the bubble fish tube and jellyfish lamp! We opened the package that day and put it together as a class family.

    We use both the bubble fish tube and the jellyfish lamp in the peace/calming corners of our classroom. The peace corners are used when a student has become overwhelmed with emotions and would like to take a moment to return back to a peaceful state. They sit in front of the jellyfish lamp or fish tank and take three calming breaths and watch the fish/jellyfish swim. Allowing their brain to focus on the fish and not their anger/sadness allows them to calm down and return to instruction.

    I love that my students are able to recognize they need to go to the peace corners. They take pride in making sure we turn them on and off each day, make sure the area is tidy, and ready to be used. It has been truly phenomenal the impact these corners have had on my classroom. I cannot thank you enough for providing peace to my students and my class. We appreciate it beyond words!

    Our next project will be working on getting sensory bins in our classroom to help with fine and gross motor skills.”

This project will help with students learning how to grow socially and emotionally during a pandemic. We are using all the tools we have to encourage our students to access calming strategies when needed. Our students are constantly learning how to manage these skills. Encouraging the development of emotional skills during a pandemic is essential. We are needing these items to add to our calming corner of our classroom. These lamps will promote mindfulness, breathing, and reflection. We all have different coping mechanisms that we have learned to use to regulate our emotions and return to a more neutral or positive space--Kids are no different!

About my class
