This project will help to establish a healthy learning environment in my first grade classroom. Students will have choices where to sit to learn. By having carpets as a seating option, students will socially interact and collaboratively participate in comfortable, flexible places in the classroom. Currently, we only have a tiled floor in our classroom. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is critical for human development in first grade. SEL is the process through which all people acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, and achieve personal goals. The carpet will be a place for students to work together, come together for math corners, hold morning meetings, and more.
