This past year at school was very difficult for a lot of reasons, in order to solve some of our problems we had to get creative in the use of our teaching spaces. I am the only art teacher at my school and I teach students from Pre-K to 7th grade, I have around 500 students. Last school year I had 3 separate teaching spaces. I had my original classroom, where I held indoor class for grades 2 and up; I had access to the adjacent courtyard for holding class outdoors; I also had a second indoor classroom that my younger students, Pre-k through 1st grade, came to. I used the outdoor space a lot in the fall and early spring but living in Texas it got too hot to be outside comfortably for an extended period of time pretty quickly once summer was approaching. I know my students would have greatly appreciated and benefited from having umbrellas on the tables that are in the courtyard. I felt guilty having to seat some of my students in the blazing sun because there weren't enough seats in the shade. I want to continue using the outdoor space this year for multiple reasons. I think creating art outside is beneficial and fun for the kids and being outside in this day and age is at least a small break from a mask and from being so restricted. I want all of my students to feel comfortable in my classroom, not hot and sweaty and not having to squint to see because the sun is so bright all around them. I think the umbrellas I have picked out will be a great addition to my outdoor space, they seem to be durable and easy to use. Please consider donating for my students!
