Emergent readers benefit from being able to make connections to their resources. Reading a book full of detail and vivid imagery simply will not do in black and white. My kindergarten students deserve to have resources such as books and work stations that are rich in color! Imagine reading a book such as "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss only to realize you've never seen the color green before. For a majority of my students, this kindergarten class is going to be their first formal school setting and they have had little exposure to colors and visual cues to help them sort and make connections to concrete materials. Being able to give my students paper books and take home practice materials in color will give them a foot in the race of receiving equitable education.
