Being a high school social studies teacher, I know it is important to engage my students in discussions that encourage them to use their critical thinking skills and be able to think like a historian. In our world today, many topics, events, situations are controversial and can cause tension and conflict. I want my students to be able to research, investigate, and use this knowledge to form their own opinions. I am asking for classroom lamps to create an environment that is comfortable and relaxing which will make all students feel as if they are in an environment that is a safe haven to further their learning rather than a cold impersonal classroom that doesn’t allow the students to feel comfortable. It is important to be inclusive of all students and their ideas when researching and discussing current events, the United States government, and events in history. I have asked for a poster of Amanda Gorman with her powerful message that she shared at Joe Biden’s inauguration. I also asked for two posters that promote kindness and students having their own viewpoints and beliefs. Markers, colored pencils, sharpies, and general school supplies will give my students the opportunity to express their learning through many different forms of assessments including cartoons, drawings, one pagers, and treasure maps. Teaching in a small rural community has many positives, but one challenge is that students don't always visualize and understand the world outside our small village. I want the students to feel safe in my classroom and know that their ideas are valued and important.
