Many of our English language learners are hesitant to interact either orally or in writing because they don’t know the “words to use". They may go through a school day quietly sitting as they try to get an understanding of what is being said. The time spent learning from home this past year due to the pandemic did not help the situation. Students spent the days staring quietly at a screen. Help my school’s English learners as they return to school by supporting a language learning opportunity that is engaging, non-threatening, and incorporates a real-world assets-based focus. This project focuses on student agency; the students will create their own vocabulary scrapbooks based on what they feel they need to learn. This will provide them the opportunity to choose relevant vocabulary that will assist them in their language development. To accomplish this, students will explore the school classroom and campus and take pictures of things that they want to learn more about. They will organize the pictures in a scrapbook (photo album) and describe them. This will help the students practice meaningful vocabulary using non-fiction visuals and descriptive, explanatory text. The vocabulary can also be translated into their native language. This project will enable vocabulary knowledge to be strengthened, personal relationships will be developed, and real-world connections will be enhanced. This will lead to a feeling of confidence that will increase student interaction.
