In our first grade classroom, we begin each day with carpet time. We take attendance, learn about the calendar, learn various ways to count, say the flag salute, listen to a story, and review weekly language arts concepts, to name a few things we do in the mornings. We do not have an organized area in which to sit. As hard as my students try, they don’t always stay in the same place on our carpet area. They just sit in an undefined area, and it would be so nice for each student to have their own designated place on a rug so they know exactly where to sit to maximize their learning.
