  • Nourishing Minds and Bodies!

    Funded Oct 15, 2024

I am grateful for your generous donation to help me create a welcoming office space for my newcomer students. Since receiving our snacks, we have welcomed more than 10 new students to our school.

Since all new Multilingual Students are tested to gauge their English language levels, they all visited our office to take a placement test. The snacks were a way to bridge a connection with the students, some of who were not comfortable speaking on that first day. It helped us show the students that they were welcome and it was a safe space.

Food can be a universal language that shows care. I know our new students are happy to feel like they can relax and come to us for questions or snacks! I appreciate your donation to help us create this safe space.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tagal

  • Multilingual Video Production

    Funded Nov 18, 2023

The Multilingual students at Waipahu High School have been afforded many opportunities to showcase their language skills. Among these have been trips to Capitol to advocate for multilingual students in the state and creating videos to help welcome new students to our school. The camera microphone you helped provide gives them the tools they need to create these videos. The snacks are an extra bonus for when they meet! We are grateful for the support of the Hawai'i State Department of Education. I know that the students appreciate the opportunity to use the equipment to showcase their skills.”

  • Popcorn for the People!

    Funded Mar 3, 2023

The generous donation of our popcorn machine has brought our students a lot of joy. Many of them had never seen popcorn actually being made fresh! They were fascinated at how the popcorn overflows and falls into the tray.

Our students were treated to fresh popcorn to celebrate their accomplishments this year. As an added bonus in learning teamwork, they helped to make it and scoop it out into the bags for serving. They were proud to deliver it to their teachers and peers.

The popcorn machine has helped our EL department continue to provide a nurturing and fun learning environment for our students. It has also been used in our afterschool tutoring sessions that often go until 4:30, provided the students with a much needed snack in the afternoon.

We are grateful for your donation and will continue to make use of our new machine!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tagal

  • Exploring the World With ELs

    Funded Oct 29, 2022

Thank you for your generous donations that have allowed us to maintain our the Oculus that we have for our students. The new chargers we received allows us to recharge quickly so that students can make the most use out of them. The new head straps also make them more comfortable for the students to use for longer periods. T

he students have been enjoying their time exploring different virtual games and videos. It has allowed us to build better relationships with them and given them much needed extra curricular time with their friends and teachers.

Two particular students had never been on a roller coaster and have now experienced it virtually! It has made our afterschool tutoring fun for them. Thank you for helping us give new experiences to our students. I know they are grateful.”

    With gratitude,

  • Beyond the Classroom Walls

    Funded Mar 10, 2022

Your donation of 4 Oculus and snacks has helped us create an afterschool club where students come to get help with work and build relationships with their teachers. Students that do not normally show up for tutoring have come in because of their interest in Virtual Reality.

Students have been so excited to see different places in the world through these glasses. They have been able to see some of the places they are studying in their Geography class and gain a different understanding of what it is like. As all of my students are immigrants, they have also been able to "visit" their homelands again and share their experiences with their friends and teachers. They have also enjoyed playing games together and having new experiences, (such as riding a rollercoaster!) which has helped them to feel more comfortable with their teachers and classmates.

I am particularly excited that our Pacific Islander students have gotten a chance to explore using these devices. Coming from Chuuk and Marshall Islands, they have never experienced anything like it. What is most rewarding is that they are excited to stay in school with their teachers doing work so they can have a chance to use the Oculus. We have seen their positive response to their teachers and school in general.

This donation has made a real difference in our school, and we are so grateful!”

  • Carrying Culture in the Classroom

    Funded Aug 18, 2021

Your donation has had a direct impact on our students. I was grateful that these books would help my students understand the value of cultural representation in literature. The majority of our students are first generation and have immigrated within the last three years. We have seen how important it is for them to see books in our classrooms that are representative of them, their culture, and their languages. These books exposed them to multicultural authors and helped them grown as writers who are learning to find their own voice. We have watched them laugh with joy and familiarity as they read the words of their own languages. This year, our English Learner students are creating a book that will be published through our local publishing company. This book will be a collection of poetry, personal narrative, and legends from their cultures. The students have been using the books purchased through your donation as inspiration while creating their own book. Their own stories will come to life in this collective piece of literature. They have been able to see the value in celebrating their cultural diversity, and because of your support, we have seen our students' confidence grow as they realize their voice and their languages have a valuable place in our community.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tagal

Our school is home to a large population of multilingual students from the Asia/Pacific region. My students range from newcomers to students who have immigrated within the last few years. Our EL teachers will use these books to incorporate their culture into writing lessons and these books will be used in other various assignments. Providing literature in their classrooms that represent their culture connects them to our school and helps provide a sense of belonging. By donating, you are helping to show our EL students that their own stories are worthy of being celebrated.
