Our students today are coming to school with trauma and severe life disruptions. As an educator, I believe it is my responsibility and privilege to be an advocate for their social and emotional learning. As I paused to take a moment to reflect, I realized that I needed to first make some changes in the physical appearance of our learning environment. Research suggests that creating a calm learning environment is a way to help students regulate their nervous systems. Students can then know how to use soothing colors and lighting to help them at home. This project will provide a way to minimize florescent lighting and provide an environment with soothing colors. I have chosen to use grays, black, white and mint green to provide a soothing space. The “cloud covers” will eliminate the florescent lights that are too bright for students’ needs. The gray seating options, rugs, and desks will provide students with a way to move and work at the same time. Some students’ trauma is severe and must move in order to work with their nervous systems. Additionally, writing in diaries will provide students with a way to “attach” …which is a human need that many students do not have met. Implementing the use of diaries with journaling will provide a lifelong strategy that can help reduce stress.
