I teach Marine Sciences and Engineering Technology at Kalaheo High School. Our marine science students are focused on the need to “Malama Moana” which is to care for and respect our marine resources in Hawai’i and world wide. They are passionate about the plants and animals and care deeply about issues such as marine debris and ocean acidification and the threat to our coral reefs. They are learning that if we take care of the ocean, it will take care of us. They are learning to practice the ideas of ALOHA and Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ). Our engineering technology students are focused on pursuing careers in the Engineering Field. They learn technical sketching, CAD design and how to use new technology. Students create projects using C&C machines, 3D printers and laser cutters. They are learning about engineering disciplines and deciding what pathway they want to pursue when they graduate.
