Success & Snacks: Nurturing EL Students with Tutoring
Funded Oct 19, 2024The resources that you have provided us for our after school tutoring program has been such an essential part of our program's success. The increase in the number of students coming in for tutoring has increased, and we have many students that return on a regular basis.
The students are always so excited when I open the box of snacks after school as many are hungry. They also enjoy getting the punch on their punch card which leads to a reward by our counselor. The dividers also provide a quiet space for some students that need that quiet area to study. Tutoring has become a very positive and enjoyable experience for our students.
In addition, the cart has been a great help in helping me wheel around the classroom to help each student with their assignments.”

Funded Feb 18, 2024Thank you so much for your generous donation. The multicultural books have motivated my Filipino, Samoan, Marshallese, and Chuukese students to want to read since they want to learn more about their country or culture. During our independent reading time, students are working on their active reading skills such as making predictions, asking questions, making connections, clarifying, and commenting on what they read.
In addition, I am using these books to serve as resources and models for our bilingual book project that we have been working on this school year. These books are an excellent resource for my students to learn and in turn share about their own language and culture. They are creating further resources for our community.”

Funded Mar 4, 2023We can't thank you enough for your generous donation. We used the crafting supplies for our after school Fricrafting (Friday Crafting) Day. The EL students would come after school to craft with students and teachers. It was a fun and safe place for my students to hang out after school.
These activities have helped to build relationships among the students as well as the teachers. The students always looked forward to our Fricrafting Day. The students were so excited and thankful for the crafting supplies and the bonds they made with their peers. Also, this activity had a big impact on our new EL students to help them to feel a sense of belonging since they just moved to Hawaii. We hope to continue these Fricrafting activities with our students next school year.”

Funded Oct 30, 2022The amount of students that attend the after school crafting sessions have been tremendous. It has become a frequent activity that the students and teachers look forward to on Fridays. It has created a very inclusive environment which has included students that are not in our classes to join the activity.
The students are always very excited to learn the next activity that we will be working on. We have made resin keychains, candles, bracelets, and other activities that the students have suggested. We are going to continue this activity on Fridays, so the students have a place to express their creativity, hangout, socialize with each other, and feel a part of the school.
It has also helped new students make new friends. Many of the new students are very shy and find it difficult to make friends. However, through these activities, they have made new friends and feel a sense of belonging.
We can't thank you enough for providing our students with these resources.”

Funded Mar 11, 2022Your contribution to our creative collaboration project has been a tremendous success. The sense of community it has created has been remarkable. Through your donation, our English language learners are finding a sense of belonging in our school. We have had over 50 students attend our first two sessions. The activities we have already had are bracelet making, resin key chain making, weaving with palm trees (Marshallese), and Chuukese bead bracelet and lei making.
The students were very grateful for all of the materials and the opportunity to participate in these activities. They are always asking us what would be the next activity. It has also helped them academically since we ask the students to check their grades before they participate. If they need help with their assignments, there are teachers available to assist them. It has also helped our students to feel more comfortable with their teachers as they participate and talk to their teachers in this informal setting.
Finally, we were able to bring in community members from various cultures to share their skills with our students. The students have learned various traditions and notice many similarities between their cultures. We hope to continue these after school sessions with out students.”

Funded Aug 5, 2021I just wanted to thank you so much for giving my students the opportunity to read books from their culture and language. By giving my English language learners the opportunity to see their own culture and language in these books, they were able to see characters or poems that they can relate to. The students love silent reading time to read these books. Also, some students have taken home some of these books to share with their family members.
In addition, we have been able to bring authors into the classroom to share their writing process. This in turn has empowered my students to be writers of their own stories which will be published into a book locally.”
